Newbury May 2006

Today is the Bachelor / Stag party of John Voyle, starting off at the Maindy Con in Ton Pentre and moving onto Newbury Races and finishing off in Chepstow Town Centre. There were around twenty of us in total, and you will recognise the faces below from previous Jolly Boy's Outings...

The rider's silks differentiate one mount from another, and are crucial to viewers desperately trying to work out which horse they have backed. The variations can include spots, hoops, stars and stripes. A more recent innovation is the use of sponsors' logos

Newbury is one of those courses with both top-class flat and jumps action. It is a big, galloping course and with its close proximity to the large Lambourn training area it rarely fails to attract the best horses under both codes. The main flat race of the year at Newbury is the Group One Lockinge Stakes in May but it also plays host to decent racing throughout the summer season, including classic trials, strong maidens, group races and competitive handicaps. The story is much the same during the winter. The Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup in November is the most prestigious handicap chase of the season and the course also plays host to the hurdle equivalent – the Tote Gold Trophy in February

The "Champion Jockey" at Newbury riding... Bombardier Bush!

There was a bit of a coincidence on the big day concerning the silks worn by our very own Stag and a jockey riding a horse in the last race of the day named "Bombardier Bush" trained by J L Dunlop and ridden by S Sanders. But this was not to be the only coincidence, as the horses name comes from the nickname of the current President of the United States... George W Bush! And as most of you will be aware, having known Farmer for a number of years... some of his statements (Classics) fall right in line with that of the Presidents!!!

Amazingly too, is that it was Bombardier Bush's first ever outing on Saturday...

...Just as it was Farmers last!
