Hints & Tips

ere we publish a few ideas that we have been given, or thought up ourselves, they may be of use to you, or of total irrelevance. If you try any of them out, then please contact us and let us know how you get on, whether it was a success or not.

For all you contractors and permies whom are working outside of the UK, but are being paid in Pounds Sterling at your UK bank. If you use cashpoints abroad to withdraw your pocket money; then as you know, apart from being ripped off by the exchange rate! you also get those nasty bank charges for using somebody else's machine. Well there is one bank in Britain that doesn't, the bank in question is the Nationwide. They offer free cash withdrawals from over 700,000 ATM's worldwide, and from my experience, the exchange rates used are extremely competitive. So you can open a Nationwide Flex account online at the following address, www.nationwide.co.uk

Another one for all you jet setting subbies out there, mobile telephone roaming charges! Possibly the biggest thorn in the side of any traveller these days. Well as we all should know by now, if you are to be staying in a foreign country for a little while, generally more than a couple of weeks, then purchasing a Sim card locally for that country is a must! Otherwise as you should be aware, every time you receive a phone call with your standard contract/pay as you go Sim you get financially raped by a roaming charge of upto £1.50 per minute... pretty steep hey! And it won't take you long to run up a bill of a few hundred pounds I assure you. So the simple answer is to get a local Sim card from one of the national mobile telephone network providers and receive Free incoming calls.

Well to add to your massive choice of alternatives (two), there are now a few companies offering worldwide Sim cards which roam on individual countries mobile telephone networks allowing you to receive Free incoming calls, and a modest charge for outgoing calls (so they say!). I have not tried any of these myself yet, but am looking for a few guinea pigs to take up the challenge... so that is where you come in. anyone fancy having a try, then please do so, and let me know the results. Obviously I am not going to pay for any of the testing or guaranteeing anything in any shape or form, or even advise which company to choose. I will leave that upto you, I am just notifying you of their existence... here are a couple to be going on with:-

Unfortunately many of us at some point have the need to contact a company or service on the telephone, even in this advanced age of being able to post your questions or comments to the relevant organisation via email or their online query forms.  And some of us just prefer to be able to TALK to someone to try to express our requirements verbally and get instant feedback too when you wish to change your British Airways Flight etc. Well as we know, a lot of the telephone numbers for these services are high charge rate telephone numbers: 0808, 0844, 0845, 0870 and 0871 etc. Well there is another alternative in the form of another telephone number... a local/national call rate number. So how do us ordinary mortals find these numbers... well thanks to an army of volunteers at saynoto0870.com we do not have to investigate too deep. Just visit their website and search for the organisation that you wish to contact, and up pops a low rate telephone number... as simple as that. And if you are a keen investigator, then you search out and add your own numbers to their list too. So you can be your own little crime buster! And so to get the number you require just visit www.justsaynoto0870.com this is what they say...

Many people don't realise that there are many phone providers offering cheaper calls to standard telephone numbers (those beginning with 01 or 02), which don't apply to 0844, 0845, 0870 or 0871 telephone numbers. - Please see the links page and click on Cheapest Call Provider for price details. This shows that by using multiple providers, you can reduce your call cost on standard telephone numbers to as little as 3p fixed cost (regardless of duration), whereas the cheapest provider to 0870 numbers during the day that I am aware of charges 4p/min (+ 3p connection fee) to call. Worst still some companies that use these numbers are actually receiving a cut of the phone call costs. If you have an 'inclusive landline calls' phone package, then it is very rare that 0844, 0845, 0870, or 0871 numbers are included in your 'free minutes' allocation, unlike normal numbers. Many mobile phone packages also exclude freephone 0800 and 0808 numbers for your bundled minutes. Many companies advertise a separate number that can be used when calling from abroad - This usually begins in the format +44 - There is nothing to stop you using this number from the UK (as it is a normal rate telephone call), and will be included in any inclusive minutes provided by your landline or mobile phone provider. Many others will give you a standard number if you ask. This site is all about listing these numbers, saving you money, without having to pay additional charges. To get started and find a particular number, please click on the 'Search to find an alternative number' link at the top of the page. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the site. Please continue to add any new numbers as and when you find them.

Millions of British homebuyers are nervously waiting to see how much mortgage / loan rates will rise this year and the next, looking round for a cheaper deal could soften any hike, but there is another option - look further a field...

American buyers are paying much less than us for their home loans and mortgages, and you could follow suit. These days, lenders such as the Skipton building society are prepared to offer you a loan based on US market rates for as little a 2.99%. On the plus side it means a big immediate saving, because major providers are charging nearer 6%. So you'll recoup £1,632 a year on an £80,000 loan. But the downside is that borrowing money abroad can be risky. If exchange rates move the wrong way, you may have to pay back more capital than you borrowed. However, in this case, Skipton is carrying the currency risk, not you! The other danger is that US interest rates could overtake our own. But this has only occurred once since 1991. At worst, you can redeem the mortgage for a fixed penalty which starts at 5% of the amount borrowed and falls to 3% in 2009. Yet at their current level, US rates would have to rise by a steep 3% before you'd be losing out.

The Skipton deal looks to be a winner, with a hefty saving to be made. But remember you have to stay with it for seven years to avoid any redemption policies. For more details see www.skipton.co.uk

I told you this was a good deal didn't I! So good in fact that The Skipton have stopped it! as it was not too good a deal for them. This was one that beat the banks!!!

Wake Up Brits... Move to Australia!!!

Three Cheers For Australia....... They don't care who they insult, take time to read it, HOW FANTASTIC

Three Cheers For Australia

Those Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday (February 2006 sometime...) to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks. A day after a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia at a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he and his ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown. Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that Australia was a secular state and its laws were made by parliament. "If those are not your values, if you want a country which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for you," he said on national television. "I'd be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia, one the Australian law and another the Islamic law, that is false. If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another country, which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option," Costello said. Asked whether he meant radical clerics would be forced to leave, he said those with dual citizenship could possibly be asked to move to the other country. Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims who did not want to accept local values should "clear off". "Basically, people who don't want to be Australians, and they don't want to live by Australian values and understand them, well then they can basically clear off," he said. Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques.

An Aussie Quote:
IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Australia. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of Australia being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Australians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, Learn the language! Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push but a fact because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home. Because God is part of our culture. We will accept your beliefs and will not question why, all we ask is that you accept ours and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.

If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like "A Fair Go", then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. By all means keep your culture but do not force it on others. This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, "THE RIGHT TO LEAVE". If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here, so accept the country YOU accepted. Pretty easy really, when you think about it. I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends it will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all try, please.

WE HAVE POSTED THIS AS PERHAPS WE CAN CREATE A GROUND SWELL AND SEND OUR POLITICIANS THE MESSAGE THAT THE VAST MAJORITY OF US BELIEVE AS THE AUSSIES DO.........

THEN ALSO MAYBE THE ISLAMIC STATES WILL ACT IN RETALIATION AS US WESTERNISED COUNTRIES HAVE, AND KICK OUT ALL THOSE FLABBY ASSED ENGLISH SPEAKING ARROGANT WHITTIES!!!

Another little tip for all you contractors, with lots of dosh to invest. If you are planning on buying a new house or apartment in the UK, from one of the big construction companies. You know the ones, Barratts & Wimpey etc; then if you buy a certain number of shares within the company, normally only around a couple of hundred quid. Then as a shareholder you are entitled to a percentage reduction against the value of your new house to be. Which can be as much as 5%; so if you guys buy a house valued at £100,000 and have enough shares, you could save £5,000. See the relative construction company share details, before purchasing; for full details.
