Cardiff Bay August 2004

ell we spent a day at Cardiff Bay on Saturday 14th August, generally just for a bit of a look around, to see how the development was progressing, as we hadn't been down there for a while. Whilst we were there, I decided to kill two birds with one stone, and took in a few viewings of some apartments that are available for sale in the area.

The 74,500 Seater Millennium Stadium and Millennium Plaza complex

Since it's opening in June 1999, the Millennium Stadium has welcomed over 1.3 Million visitors per year. With the first retractable roof in the UK, the Stadium is a multi-purpose, all round venue. With a UEFA 5-Star rating, it has quickly established itself as a world class venue and is now the home of five major sporting bodies: The Welsh Rugby Union, The Football Association, The Football League, The Football Association of Wales and the British Speedway Association

The Millennium Stadium was completed at a cost of £165million

The main feature of the stadium, is the retractable roof. It takes 20minutes, and a mere £2.54 to open to an expanse of 105m x 80m

Part of the reason for the Cardiff Bay Barrage, was that the harbour at Cardiff experienced one of the worlds greatest tidal ranges: up to 14m. This had meant that at low tide, it was inaccessible for up to 14 hours a day

The Cardiff Bay Barrage, cost £220m to construct, and has an annual running cost of £9m

The construction of the barrage was one of the largest engineering projects undertaken in Europe. Completed in 1999 (kind of), it has created a 500 acre freshwater lake with 8 miles of waterfront and it is hoped it will stimulate the future development of the Bay as a tourist and leisure destination, as well as accelerating the inward investment potential of South Wales as a region.
