Capri September 2006

nother day dawns on our family holiday in Italy, so it's off for a day trip to Capri...  which is an Italian island off the Sorrentine Peninsula. On the south side of the Gulf of Naples, it has been a celebrated beauty spot and resort since the time of the Roman Republic. Overlooking Capri harbour from the rotunda in Villa San Michele. The main features of the island are regularly portrayed on postcards: the Marina Piccola (Small Harbour), the Belvedere of Tragara, which is a high panoramic promenade lined with villas, the limestone masses that stand out of the sea (the 'Faraglioni'), Anacapri, the Blue Grotto 'Grotta Azzurra'. Above all are the ruins of the Imperial Roman villas. Capri is in the region of Campania, Province of Naples. The City of Capri is the main centre of population on Capri. It has two adjoining harbours, Marina Piccola and Marina Grande (the main port of the island). The separate commune of Anacapri is located high on the hills west from the city of Capri.

The boat trip from Sorrento to Capri

Capri is served by frequent ferry and hydrofoil service to Naples and Sorrento, as well as many other boat services to the ports of the Gulf of Naples and the Sorrentine Peninsula. Boats call at Marina Grande, from where you can take the Funicular up to the village of Capri

Capri is a tourist destination for both Italians and foreigners. In the 1950s, Capri became a popular destination for the international jet set. The central piazzetta of Capri, though preserving its modest village architecture, is lined with luxury boutiques, expensive restaurants, and paparazzi chasing celebrities. During summers, the island is heavily touristed, often by day trippers from Naples and Sorrento

You can choose to join the crowd and live unforgettable days sitting at the many bars in the “piazzetta” , shopping at the elegant boutiques in Camerelle Street or eating at the local restaurants in Capri, where the person sitting at the table next to yours may be a wealthy and famous one.
But you can also choose the peace and quiet of the streets in Anacapri or the solitary paths to the sea with breathtaking landscapes

Welcome to Capri: 11 sq km of natural and artificial beauties. The Emperor Augustus was the first one to discover this magnificent place, it was the year 29 B.C. After him Tiberius and many others: Lenin, Mussolini, the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe and the factory owners Knupp. Each one of them left something to the island which has never stopped enchanting people

Funicular

The island of Capri has a funicular railway that runs from the port of Marina Grande upto Capri Town. It was built in 1907 and costs approx €1.30 for a single journey

Be warned.. to dine or even have a coffee in Capri is a wallet lightening experience. Even the ropiest looking café will happily sting you over £5 / €7.50 for a coffee and a pastry. If you must, make it last, sit back and enjoy the views and refuse to be hustled out of your seat

The "heart" of Capritown is the Piazza Umberto I - which is a small, closed-off square resembling a courtyard. One of the main features of the Piazza is the ''Torre dell'Orologio'', or Clock Tower. This tower is possibly the bellower of the old cathedral. Around the piazza is the medieval quarter, interesting for its history and layout and its network of small, winding alleys. The piazza was most likely built on the site of a primitive inhabited area of Capri. This piazza is where the funicular brings you to from the marina

The Faraglioni of Capri island comprises of three stand-alone cliff rocks sitting on the Mediterranean sea in the bay of Naples is one of the most significant sights the island has to offer

Names have each been given to the three rocks of Capri - Stella (still attached to the main island), Mezzo (after Stella), and Scopolo or Fuori. The Lacerta Viridens Faraglionesis or the blue tinted lizard can be found only on Scopolo
