Bristol Harbour Festival July 2005

e all visited the 2005 Bristol Harbour Festival in July, that is my parents (Edwin & Anne), Korina and I. It was a very enjoyable weekend, and the weather was the key player. Bristol's historic harbour was thronged with a flotilla of tall ships, Navy ships, hundreds of smaller craft and the replica of HMS Pickle - the fastest schooner in Nelson's fleet, which during it's day brought news of his death from the battle of Trafalgar. The festival featured hundreds of special children's activities, a spectacular programme of dance styles from around the world, including a celebration of Bristol's twin cities of Guangzhou, in China, and Puerto Morazan, in Nicaragua, there were free concerts on the music stage and a spectacular firework display to finish it all off with the event was sponsored by EDF - whoever they are!

An estimated 200,000 people attended a hugely successful EDF Energy Bristol Harbour Festival which, for the first time, spanned three days. In attendance was the largest flotilla of ships yet, with tall ships Kaskelot, Earl of Pembroke, Phoenix and Kathleen and May, and the replica of HMS Pickle - the ship which carried the news of Nelson's death from the Battle of Trafalgar, several pilot cutters and The Matthew. In addition, there were navy ships, lifeboats and approximately 250 boats of all shapes and sizes

On the land, visitors to the festival were treated to a fantastic array of entertainment, including circus and street performance programmed by Bristol based Cirque Bijou, an outstanding range of music from around the world programmed by the Colston Hall, and a new and expanded World Dance stage programmed by the Rorschach Group. The ever popular French Market together with Bristol's twin city celebrations gave the festival an international atmosphere, and the Saturday night firework show was once again a spectacular highlight of the event
